View Full Version : Pick your favorite logo entry for Retro64

Hi All:
As I posted earlier on Indiegamer, I held a contest to see who could design the best retro64 logo. The winner gets my ipod :)
Anyway, here are all the entries (http://www.retro64.com/bf2222/all_logos.png). Which do you like?

Well it may not be fair.. but I'd extend the contest... I dont see one in here that really jumps out and says... YES this is my new logo.

I like number 2, but I'd guess my favourite out of the lot is number 30. We have a lot of talented logo-artists here.

I like #6 - nice and simple with a propert logo symbol that you can reuse all over the place.

Nothing really leaps out and grabs me and says I AM THE ONE! I'm looking for something that's Readable, Memorable, and Special. (of course, it doesn't help that I've always felt that Retro64 was the wrong name for a site whose games aren't particularly retro...)
Ones that I like:
8 - if you really were a retro games site, but you aren't. :)
11 - Shiny, appealing, readable... but lacking that little something special. Perfectly good, but not quite wow.
38/41 - I find them visually appealing. 38 is cleaner, 41 is a little funkier and manages to play on Retro (groovy!) without bringing up the "but it's not really c64 retro games!" problem. 43 is also cute but it says 'Diner' to me. However, this whole set may be lacking in the Memorable category.

Actually it was me ;) glad you like it.
If i were to choose (of course not from the ones I submitted) I would choose number 4 and also consider number 11-14 very nice slick looking but a bit too generic.

well well, here are my opinions:
Most of them arent really memorable, original, special, except the one i did, number 47, look at how it is done, the R has a very original effect that stands out in the crowd (i think), wich is good, maybe if some other logos tried to be different they would be perfect, shame mine is more for a racing team rather than for a gaming site.
Number 2 is the best one, because it looks really simple, and "child" like, for fun, for kids, and its beautyfull, but lacks the specific personallity of the site, games, and owner (i think). Maybe if you add a logotype to it, like the M for macdonalds, or the golden guy of Lucasarts it would be the most perfect for the site. Also, it reminds me a little of Capcom...

My vote would go to number 13, if it was changed slightly i.e. have the charachter in the "O" and maybe with the "O" a bit larger than the rest of the letters.

I liked 8,10,13
However, looking at the logos one thing that was going through my mind was the 64 seemed out of place. In my opinion the 64 does not have any type of symmetry to it.
I guess on a subconsious level I was looking for
Retro Games , Retro 80's or Retro Arcade or something like that.
I know the 64 is based upon the old Commodore 64 machine but their is a segment of folks who will never connect that dot in my opinion.
Just my thoughts ;)

I like number 3, but it glows a little too much for me. My second favorite is number 8. I pick based on what I think the logo represents when I see it. Both of these to me represent retro games. On number 8, the only thing I didn't like was the font.

I think #1 is my favorite. (fun font and colors, looks retro but still attractive.)
#2/#3 are cool too.
#30 has a certain charm to it. The colors are nice, and the font is playful.
Production quality on #44-45 are great, but the logo itself doesn't appeal to me.
Truthfully, none of these grab me as being The Next Great Thing, but many of them are a huge jump up from your current logo, and certainly worth the price of an iPod. =)

Well, I really like some on there :)
I'm not sure why you changed mine so much though... (although I still don't think it's even close to the level of some of other entries. That'll teach me to recycle unused logo work.)
Anyway, my pick is #45 (but "Retro" needs to be on a single line and not broken up like that.)

I like #1, #12 and #48
I think #40/42 would be good if the '64' was same size/line/orientation as Retro, just to the right (i.e. normal spacing), but with that yellow color, and with included in the 'echo image' effect.
All the others? meh...

2 and 3: Probably my favorite. They look very retro, but not out-of-date, and still professional. Very nice.
4: Hilarious :D
8: Looks a lot like those retro t-shirts.
9: It's good, but looks too much like the RaptiSoft logo
10: I like the design (It reminds me of 80's design, which I love), but something about it seems just slightly amateur - although I honestly can't place exactly what. *shrug*
12: Very nice, but just doesn't look "fun".
30: Not bad, but I would read it as "64 Retro"
41: Pretty good (especially if the 64 is changed to the yellow like in 40), but I still like 2 and 3 better.
45: The separated "R" looks awkward, but if it was 1. Put right in front of the "E", 2. Set to the same size as the rest of the letters (and consequently making the logo more rectangular) and 3. Lose the extra elongated portion of both "r"s and the "e", than it would look VERY nice, and would be a tie in my mind with logos 2 and 3.
48: Not to bad, but I honestly agree with Robert Cummings's deleted comment about it looking to much like, umm, well... sperm. And I don't mean that in an immature joking way - it *does* look suggestive.
49: Get rid of some of the extra margin, and scale it up a little so you can make out the little squares more easily, and it would be very nice.

I like #8, but you could make the "retro64" string much prettier. Also like #13.
Number 48 has some potential, but the text isn't very appealing and the black background is horrible. I really like the pixelated invader though.
Production quality on 44 and 45 make these really stand out, but I don't like the separated R. I think if these could be tweaked they'd be a good choice.

I am dismayed by the fact no-one has yet voted for humble logo #18.
It may lack the design, glitz and talent of the other logos, but it's got heart.
At first glance, logo #18 appears to be a vertically flipped C64 logo with a cheap fulcrum added. It also appears that the designer didn't even have the decency to clean up the source image (probably the first image that Google Image Search returned).
At first glance. But...
Doesn't logo #18 bring back fond memories of Copy-Q, PaperClip and Power Supply burnouts?
Doesn't logo #18 remind you why you kept going to arcades even though you had a C64 at home?
Doesn't logo #18 remind you of just how crappy those C64 games looked?
Logo #18 is Charlie Brown's choice.
If the gang would just give it a little love and attention, I'm sure it would be the greatest Retro 64 logo of all time.

Yes--it's $199--but do you really want to work with a company that can't spell the word "testimonies" correctly? Not only do they spell it "testomonies", but that's not even the appropriate word in this case, since it means statements under oath. So, it should be "testimonials." In one word, they screwed up both spelling and grammar!

It's a matter of professionalism. If they're unprofessional in what they say, that raises doubts about how professional their actual work is. They could be the best service is the world, but if they mess up spelling and grammar on their own promotional materials, it's difficult to trust them to be that good.

I think most of this is being nit-picky.
To me the overall message of the site is VERY GOOD. It tells me how they are different from their competion and what price you will pay and also the process of dealing with them. I do not see the obligatory CALL FOR PRICING
Has anyone stated any of the following about these guys?

Come on guys, can we all say 100% that we do not have any typo's or spelling/grammar mistakes on our own websites.I can say 100% I don't have any mistakes on my site... not that it would bother me as my personal site doesn't sell anything.
If someone's homepage has spelling mistakes, who cares? but buying from a site which has spelling mistakes... might as well be buying from ebay.
I don't hold bad grammar or spelling against anyone I don't buy stuff from. Fact is, if they can't be bothered to check the website that does business, what makes you think they give a shit about your logo or you?

Nice job! I really like this one.
In all honesty it was meant to be a very sarcastic joke! It took me all of 10 minutes to put this together, which equates to the amount of value I would put on a Ipod or something like that.
This whole LOGO CONTEST thing is starting to get out of hand in my opinion. These types of threads need to be moved to the HELP WANTED forum in my opinion. The winner should have the choice of the prize or cash. I think if these contests are run from the persons site where more people have access ( like customers, etc..) I have no problem with them. But when they are exclusively tailored toward the resources in the Indie Forums, then that bothers me.
um Ipods cost upwards of 300$ or more (Canadian)... I highly doubt 10 minutes of your time is worth that much. Just saying is all... there is nothing wrong with a little contest here and there. It helps lighten up the board a bit.

YAY! I hope it's me :) I made the whitespace that surrounds all the logos. Don't you think it's very well done, and provides a good contrast for each of the other entries?

You do realize he just used a graphic off of his own web site and added Retro 64 to it :) http://www.smallware.com/images/guarantee.gif
Why did you like that one, by the way?

Some nice works - some good starting points for a logo but nothing really stands out.
The result to me is no logo - it's a smooth illustration for a web button or a GUI element with the name incorporated. Sorry if I offended the creator...

So Mike, what happens next?
Are you going to use the logo on your site, etc.?
Just curious... ;)

After looking at each logo one by one by sizing my window aaccordingly, 12 just looks the best.
It has the most professional appeal to it!
There all great logos but i like number 47 because it looks retro. i would like it more if the word retro was in white under the R just like the 64 is though
also number 10 is really cool.
i like all of the ones that look like retro games basically, but all of the ones that look like number 11 also look nice to me.

Hi All:
As I posted earlier on Indiegamer, I held a contest to see who could design the best retro64 logo. The winner gets my ipod :)
Anyway, here are all the entries (http://www.retro64.com/bf2222/all_logos.png). Which do you like?
I'd say that [8] gives the idea more than all the (anyway very nice) others. ;)
