Under the rules for the competition...

"Entrant acknowledges and agrees that if selected by the Round 1 Competition Jury into the Final Round, entrant will abide by all Conference and Festival rules and regulations and will exhibit its Game Entry at the Festival. Such exhibition will include, without limitation, (i) staffing a Conference booth; (ii) demonstrating the Game Entry during specified hours; and (iii) conducting itself in a manner that upholds the good name and reputation of the Conference and Festival.

IGF Competition entrants will be responsible for all their costs of travel, meals, accommodations and equipment in connection with the Festival and Conference."

I was going to enter our first game into the competition, but since we can't afford to work that kind of an operation from Australia- goodbye! Does anyone else think this is a pretty strange thing to expect from entrants, who can hardly afford to make their first game? I mean, I can understand the whole 'gotta be there to sell your game' thing, but... I'd be *very* surprised if anyone from outside of the US would pay the cost to turn up.

they don't ask for much. for instance, check out what you have to do to be part of an indie movie maker festival: http://www.festival-cannes.fr/pratique/reglement.php?langue=6002

and they don't even talk about that low-level stuff you are referring to here...

offcourse from an artistic viewpoint this sucks, because money/organization seems to play a much greater role than it should...

just an idea, maybe you wan't to celebrate the release of your game in some sort of a local fashion. presentation/partie at your loca computer user club, maybe combined with some competitons for gamers etc...

I would just add a person to your team that lives in the US (even better, in California). Call them the press contact or something and have that be the person that goes. Shouldn't be too difficult to find someone trustworthy and excited enough about your game to do that with you.

Gmicek, that's a great idea. Thankyou :) I'm not sure if we'll sign up yet, but... great idea. Hopefully there's room for that in the rules.

I was thinking more along the lines of a huge assault on the international gaming media ;)

however, if you do, what about an editor of an indie games news site who is passionate about games anyway, is supposed to be trustworthy and lives in the us, better yet, even in california (and had that excellent idea))?

You know, I'm a real moron because I missed that! :D

Actually, I still have a few things to look into, because we may not have a version complete enough in time. They accept beta versions, but... it's always good to make sure you're not paying to have a disaster rated :)

Gmicek, were you hinting at yourself in that post, or...?

Ha, yeah, i guess my post does seem to imply that I'm hinting a bit doesn't it? I wouldn't be able to do it because I'm one of the judges, otherwise I would have been happy to!

Well, I guess we should enter then, since you could just give us a really bad mark so we don't have to go anywhere :)

I attended IGF/GDC 2004 when Space Station Manager was selected as a finalist. Sure, you had to pay for your own travel arrangements, but you also get one or two GDC passes for free. In the end I had help from two locals so I spent most of my time attending GDC sessions. In retrospect I would really recomend the event. :)

Flights alone for myself (not my brother, and not including whatever it'd take to bring one of our computers) would cost somewhere around the $2500AUD mark. I'm sure it'd be great, but our game would need to sell like hotcakes to afford a trip like that.

FWIW, i'm in the same boat. Was hoping to enter the IGF, but i'm in Australia and didn't realise I had to be there..

Kind of sucks, doesn't it? ;)

Ahh well, I guess we'll both just have to make games so good, there won't be any reason to come out trumps at Igf. Either that, or you and I can wrestle for the one guy going to Igf that could set us up a booth :)

I'd suppose that exactly opposite - one more reason to ask for your help Gregory... :D

Haha, no doubt! By the way, Invasion Waves is a great game! Sorry I didn't respond to your PM on Dex, but I've really enjoyed the demo thusfar. You can see more of my thoughts on it in this months Game Tunnel month end review when it goes online any day now.
