Set 3 I suppose.

Set 2 has the best readability because of the contrast, however, since it seems to be the only place where you have red, it`d clash with the rest of design mightily.

I have to agree with set 3! Just because it looks the best :p The red buttons are too overpowering compared to the rest.

Set 2 and 4 are the most readable... I think I like 2

All 4 are really nice :D

1-3 are the slickest, but not as readable.

2 has good readability but I think the menu steals all the attention.

4 is nice and is maybe a good compromize between readability and attention.

If I had to choose I would go for 4 (Green is nice too :p )

Suggestions:
Try 1 with some darker outlines around the text.
Try 2 with some blueish menu backround.

There's a record? ;) Actually, I spend most of my day in front of the computer while my wife is at work, and I take 10 minute breaks every hour. This keeps me fresh, and I'd recommend anyone working > 2 hours to try it out. But this is way off topic! :)

Maybe it's just me, but I never did like that particular shade of blue for a background color. I didn't care for it at all in Master of Orion III. I'm just not sure why.. A different shade might open up more color schemes for the buttons. However, perhaps most people love that particular background color; I'm just not one of them.
