Help! Forgotten dns register details...

yes I know Im stupid... I registered my domain in 1999, and god khows who with, I can do a whois and see the dns name servers, but I need to change them now, and cant see how to do it unless I know what the company is and my 6 year-old details.
I thought internic was the global place to handle this stuff? Am I missing something stupid here?
