In the past I have read some posts various places discussing "indie music" in "indie games" ...

I am looking for a relationship with one (or several) "indie musicians" for a "bar" soundtrack - thinking rock, maybe a little country.

I am not sure how these deals work normally as I have always delt strictly with "royalty free" music from those giant multi CD sets, but I want to try something different with this project.

There is very little budget, but we can work out various cross promotional opportunities to ensure that the band's name (and potentially website etc.) - so people can buy the music - are given excellent exposure.

I am envisioning this as a "branding" opportunity for a band, rather than primarily a "direct revenue" opportunity.

I appreciate any suggestions or tips etc.

My brother did the (outstanding) music for Void War (http://www.rampantgames.com/voidwar.html), and that work landed him a deal to do the soundtrack for an independent film. It's exposure - free advertising (and you might even get a small payment or royalty out of it), not to mention a portfolio-builder.

It also means he may not have much time to do music for the rest of my games, but we'll see :)

For my current game, I licensed 11 samples from indy musicians. I paid about $100 per loop. They were a great bunch of people to work with! I'm scouring the net this week for music for my next game.

I'll be announcing my current game for the PC real soon now...

I'm working with a guy named Aaron Walz who is pretty darn brilliant. Fast, professional, and affordable.

He has tons of midis on his site, but if you contact him, ask him for some of his mp3 samples. Amazing stuff.

Here is a sample MP3 he made for my upcoming game. It's a live acoustic with a flute player.

He also has a rock band, so he's good at modern techno stuff.
