View Full Version : Decent Shooter Sound Effects?

I've been searching for a decent place to buy stock sound effects (I can't afford to have them produced especially) for a sci-fi shooter. However sites with 'video game' sound effects are all REALLY retro (spectrum style) and 'sci-fi' sound effects are so cheesy, reminding me of early startrek episodes.

Ideally I'd like to buy each effect individually, anyone know of a good source for this kind of thing?

Thanks

I'm not certain but have a look at Indie Sfx (http://www.indiesfx.co.uk) .

It's set up by Mark Sheeky who posts in these forums. I'm not sure if it'll cater for your needs though, you'd have to speak to the man himself or look at the reams of samples he has available.

It's worth a look and the prices are very reasonable.

Nowhere really... but I made all of ours using a program called Buzz (and a bunch of free vst plugins) along with things like Stomper Hyperion. As soon as you learn the basics, something like those will give you a massive range of non flash-gordon effects. Explosions and other more realistic soundfx need to come from more realistic sources (I recommend www.audiolicense.net) but you can get away with a lot for things like shooters. I also purchased a soundfx CD filled with hundreds of poor quality samples. With a bit of work I boosted their quality and managed to change them into the most unusual of sounds.

It's time, sure... but I think it's worth learning if you plan on creating games for a while. Email me if you'd like to know what kinds of things work best.

I really don't have the time to mess around with sounds, I'd much rather just spend $50-$80 a be done with it. Though at this rate it may take longer to find a good shop than it would to make them...

You could try looking into serious Hollywood effects places that sell stock libraries. Sometimes you can find a "bargain bin" item or two in their catalogs like these, for instance:

Most of the other collections on that site cost hundreds.

That site doesn't give any licensing terms for what it is selling. That's a big turn-off for me since a lot of royalty-free audio vendors geared towards film and video production will often specifically exclude licensing for use in electronic games. I wouldn't buy anything without knowing the licensing terms. Of course, I could just e-mail them and ask, but... hmm... no contact info that I can find. Caveat emptor!

this is the sound library you are looking for:
sounddogs (http://www.sounddogs.com)
I've used them for years and they are brilliant.

Thanks cliffski!

Just to let people know, I just bought most of the sounds I need, some from SoundDogs and some from SoundRangers - they are both good sites as long as you are patient enough to find what you're looking for. Took ages!

There's a few audio packs at Garage Games you might look at.
