Hi, just trying to find some information as to which version of DirectX ships as a BASE version of the windows platform in question.

ie. Win2k professional ships with which version of DX? 8.0?

I ask because:
(a) I'm curious
(b) Typical indie business reasons
(c) Trying to decipher other indie game products that list system requirements but no specific directx version...meaning that it should work with win95 (or whatever) right out of the box..

Sorry if this if a FAQ, I'm just having trouble tracking it down...

thanks!

This is from memory so I could be wrong :)

Win95SR2 - 3.0
WinNT4 - 3.0
Win98 - 5.0
Win98SE - 6.1a
Win2k - 7.0 or 7.0a (I think 7.0a)
WinMe - 7.1
WinXP - 8.1
WinXPSP2 - 9.0c

Also, DX8.0a is the last version that runs on Win95. I seem to remember reading that Win98 (initial version, not SE) won't run 9.0c.

From Conitecs' (makers of GameStudio) website:

DX6 .... basic 3D support, no hardware T&L, integrated in Windows 95
DX7 .... similar to DX 6, but hardware T&L, integrated in Windows 98
DX8 .... major improvements, shader support, integrated in Windows 2000, ME, XP
DX9 .... similar to DX8, C-like shader language, requires separate installation
