An 8.2 quake has hit the coast of Sumatra, prompting a new tsunami alert. It's been also felt in Thailand and other countries:

I'll live. My games aren't making quite enough to afford a place "Right right" on the beach just yet :-)

I have a feeling such properties will be getting a lot cheaper in the near future...

The tsunami alert has been canceled. After 4 hours, the biggest wave they found was 4 inches high.
It's amazing how this earthquake was so close in location to the December earthquake and fairly close in strength (8.7), yet this one caused no noticeable tsunamis.

It is interesting.. but I believe the richter scale is LOG based so an 8 quake is 10x less powerful than a 9 etc.. so those numbers may be a little deceiving.
I think it also partly depends what the quake actually does. If it displaces a lot of earth, like an underwater landslide or a fissure opens up then water will be displaced and cause a big wave. But if the quake just shakes without displacing a lot of water then it wouldnt cause a big wave. That kind of thing...

Well, because of this an 8.2 eq is also way bigger than an 8 eq ;)
