View Full Version : Real Command
I didnt know where to post so Im posting here:
"Real Command"
3D RTS/FPS hybrid game based on WW2 theme
Engine info:
We started working on our own engine in about a 7 months. Now, it is 50% done. Sound engine, Kernel, Network and some parts of Graphics engine are done (lightning, texturing, working on terrain engine). To make it 100% finished we need to do Graphics engine and some tools (Map Editor...etc). Engine is being written in C++ using DirectX.
Game info:
This game is 3D RTS/FPS hybrid game based on WW2 story. It means player will be able to play the game from bird's perspective (classic RTS) and First Person, bot not classic forst person, more like 3rd person. Player will be able to zoom in and zoom out the view. We are going to add a lot of new and very interesting ideas to this game that you have never seen before. We are trying to make it as realisitc as it is possible. We will add more economy, politics and really a lot of new great ideas. The main game idea is "actions have consequences". It means whole World War II is up to you. It depends on your actions and decisions. Except single player game (Campaign), player will be able to play multiplayer game (over net or lan). All weapons and vehicles are going to be «original» from World War II. You will be able to upgrade your vehicles, fix them when they are damaged, buy new parts for it and such interesting things.
You'll be given more info if you become a team member.
Help Wanted:
We are doing fine in programming and audio, but we need some help in modelling, texturing and animating. So this is what we need:
- 1 or more modellers: His job will be to model human characters (soldiers). We will need two versions of each model, low and high poly. Low poly ~ 500 polys, high ~ 1500 polys.
- 1 or more texturers and skinners: His job will be to create quality textures for models (vehicles, characters, weapons [he can choose what]) and put them on models.
- 1 or more animators: His job will be to animate models (vehicles, characters, weapons [he can choose what]).
Info: You can use Lightwave, 3ds max or Milkshape modeller.
Paying:
We are small team and have no money to pay for your work, but be sure that you will be payed if game sells and makes some profit.

Perhaps a sacrificial "help wanted" forum, to keep these out of the way?

Sacrificial or no, the "help wanted" forum on GarageGames got me connected with several artists when I desperately needed help for Void War. I needed to offer some token $$$ to get noticed above the din, but it worked.

Nebo,
Why don't you check out some of the content packs at GarageGames.com? There are a couple of groups producing them, and I believe that they are reasonably priced. Around twenty or thirty dollars each I think, though I'm not sure exactly. That may help you get your art (and sound) assets going.
Don't forget, you are making an indie game. It doesn't have to have the artistic quality of a AAA title like Doom 3 or the like.
It sounds like you have made a decent start. Good luck with your game.
Thank you all for compliments!
I really cant pay, we dont have any money, everyone on the team is working for free, but also, everyone will get paid when game sells.
So I'm looking someone to help my game, but for no money for now, but he can be sure he will get paid when game sells!

Hey Nebo -
I hear ya. I've been in the same boat. The problem that you are going to face is that 98% of indie projects fail completely. They never get completed, and never sell. Of the remaining 2% that get that far, I'd say 75% of them come from teams that have already produced games in the past.
So a new game from a new developer has roughly a one-in-two-hundred chance of ever seeing the light of day. On top of that, the majority of independent games don't sell significant numbers, so the amount of money you are talking about is really small.
Without anything else to distinguish you from all the other guys out there that aren't gonna make it, you are going to have a tough time recruiting help from strangers. It's going to be an uphill battle, and I wish you lots of luck. But you may want to consider scaling down your efforts to start with.

I agree. Mods should close and/or delete this kind of thread immediately!
I agree. Mods should close and/or delete this kind of thread immediately! That's perhaps a bit harsh.
How about a help wanted section and an unpaid help wanted section?
Then you are free to ignore whichever you want.

That may have been harsh but I think pointing posters to those other forums is the right answer.
I think the best answer would be an FAQ entry that points people who want to post these types of messages to the gamedev/flipcode/garagegames forums. This really helps out both parties because the poster is much more likely to find people on those other sites than they are here, since the vast majority of people posting here are already doing their own thing and aren't looking for (especially no-pay) projects to join.

I think that's a good solution.
Nebo, I think it'd be better if you lay out an exact list for the guys you want to 'hire', of what it is you need done. You won't always find modellers who are happy to leave skinning to someone else. Also, by the way you've written the above, it makes me wonder who it is that's doing your vehicle models. Is anyone at the moment?

Im not against adding a help wanted section, except insomuch as there's very few help-wanted posts. I'm not sure it merits a section at this point. Just not enough content. As for allowing or disallowing threads of this sort.. i have no problem with it. If you don't want to help for no money then don't help. I assume that's the norm, but there may be students or people just learning 3D that want something real to work on that may do it just to get their chops up.

The thread title was a bit misleading - I expected a game to test, not a help request. Other than that, I don't have a problem with this thread.

You might want to scrap up a budget of a few hundred dollars. Shouldn't be too difficult for a team to toss together even if it means getting an extra job for a month and halting progress on the game for that amount of time. Several hundred can go a LONG way, and you are going to be faced with having to spend money once you get to release time anyway (domain, hosting, business registration, possibly fees related to payment processing). By not getting some money together to help you along with this stuff you put yourself at a big disadvantage unnecessarily.
Either way, good luck with your project and thumbs up for dedication if you complete it!
I already have vehicle and weapon modeller but, as I said, I need someone to model characters. Skinning and animating, of course, I need that too! So if you can do it its great!
Guys, i posted looking for help, I didnt posted so you can tlk about adding help wanted forum to this site and such other things.
Please post ONLY if you have any suggestion, comment or critic for my project, OR if you want to join us. Or you simply delete my thread if you dont think it doesnt belong here.

It still bothers me to see the exact same phrase over and over again. You spend money on cds, clothes, movies, junkfood, tickets to shows and whatever it is that you want and you don't want to spend a single dime to hire personnel to help you. It's not like I'm looking to be hired, I have my own game and a job to fund it.
But it bothers me that when someone complains he doesn't have enough money to buy a car/guitar/money for his hangouts, the first thing that comes up is "get a job". But why when you want to make a pro game and want to *hire* a team the first thing that comes to mind "ah, there are people that will do that for free" ? you will spend money on burgers/pizza/cds but not on your dream creation? I think it shows how much dedicated you are for your cause.
However, If you think you are on the right path, Its your choice. Doesn't mean that i'm right, Just my view on things.
Good luck with your game

One thing that shows how much the signal to noise ratio have dropped in these forums is the fact that some people don't seem to mind these kind of posts. The Dexterity forums, at the time when they were alive and well, contained almost exclusively content that was really helpful and relevant to people running their own game company, or trying to get it off the ground.
As been said before, there are lots of other places (garagegames, gamedev.net, flipcode) where you can post and read help wanted ads from amateurs and hobbyists. These forums (or rather its predecessor) used to be unique in that it focused on the business side of things.
Personally, I think the best things to do with threads like these is to just not post anything to them, and just wait for the moderators to delete them.
