Assuming I don't mind reading books on-screen, is it good value?

I use to have it. I eventually canceled because I found I wasn't using it as much as I thought I would. With regards to the selection and quality of the books though I was happy.

I use it and I love it.

I used to buy a lot of tech books, but often I would only skim then quickly and read the one or two chapters relevant to what I was doing at the moment, and then the book would end up in the corner never to be opened again - well almost.

So I like Safari. I have a 10 book bookshelf so I can read 120 books per year. And you get the benefit of full-text search across all books - no need to scan through table of contents.

They even have a decent amount of books on game programming.

Check it out - you can try it two weeks for free.

There's even an Eclipse plugin for it. :)
I've just signed on for the 2 week demo. It looks impressive. I guess the only downside is that you don't actually own the books, and you can only download a certain number of chapters before the book leaves your shelf. Or can a book stay on your shelf for ever? It's not made entirely clear in the docs...
