Unless you have uncontrollable muscle spasms or your fingers don't do what you tell them to, I fail to see how the Windows keys are a problem. :)
Anthony Flack
02-07-2005, 05:44 AM
I don't have a problem with them personally, but I really like using left ctrl, left alt and left shift as my 1, 2 and 3 buttons. I'd make them the default game keys, but it seems like everyone else can't use these keys without hitting the windows key. And they're such a nice cluster of keys apart from that.
But what's with that damn key, anyway? Why is it there? Does anyone actually push it on purpose, ever? The only function it ever performs is to rudely and unexpectedly yank you out of a game.
Anyway.
Here's my workspace: www.squashysoftware.com/workspace.jpg
You'll note that I didn't take the trouble to tidy up first. Also, space is extremely limited in our apartment. I've had a few quite nice setups in the past, but for the time being I have to make do with this.
NuriumGames
02-07-2005, 05:45 AM
Windows keys are a problem because they are between the very often used Control and Alt so once in a while I would press the windows key instead of them and the init windows menu would pop up to disturb me :) , not a great problem but I'm better without them.

win+r (run)
win+f (find)
win+ctrl+f (find computer)
win+e (explorer)
win+d (show desktop - press again to pop all windows up again)
win+m (minimize all)
win+shift+m (undo "minimize all")
win+break (system properties)

win, up, return, return (to shutdown the comp if anything crashed into the driver of my graphics card) ;)

Mine are yanked too. I can still push them if I have some dire need (never happened yet...), but now I don't ever hit them on accident. HATE those things.
David, you use a laptop all the time?! My brain would EXPLODE. This is my invention: A laptop where the monitor and keyboard/CPU are unlockable at the hinge, so just a cord connects them (and a foot can pop out of the monitor so it can stand up). That way, a laptop could actually be usable instead of squeezing the keebie and monitor together! Heck, it'd be an excellent desktop that way even.
Jim Buck
02-07-2005, 07:08 AM
I also use only a laptop. When it's on my desk, I have an external keyboard, mouse, speakers, and 21" LCD monitor plugged in.. so it feels like a "real" computer. :)

Pic 1: The outside of the building. There is a dentist on the first floor, so consequently, my office always smells like a dentist's office.
Pic 2: My company name on the door outside, oooooohhhh I feel all important now!
Pic 3: The office itself. Notice how boring it is, but at least I have a semi-comfortable chair, Andy! :-)
PS: The keyboard I use is so old that it doesn't even have the dreaded windows keys!
Hell Mike!
I have to comment on my chair again! :-)
Guys check what ever medical literature you can find and you will get that this is much better for the health to seat on hard (solid?) surface. Everything else goes just from that companies manufacturing yours working seats. Say you - I can't seat in any of them for more than five minutes! :D

It may be that I've never used a star trek chair (and there's no way we have room for one currently), but honestly, it doesn't really bother me. I don't know why that is - it's not like I'm fat and padded, either.
And where's all the clay???
If this was one of my previous workspaces, you would have seen an impressive collection of models, with lights, camera, sets and all the rest. But due to lack of space, all the clay stays packed away now. When I want to do some animation I have to clear off the TV table and set it up there. I sometimes get more work done at home by getting away from all the distractions at the office. It is sometimes hard to do programming at the office because I am too busy being the producer. I formally used 22" and 19" iiyama monitors, but i finally upgraded to 21.3" and 19" samsung LCDs. The LCDs are soooo much better than the CRTs. I can't believe i didn't do it sooner.

I believe that a hard chair probably is better for you, but I still don't want to sit on one, especially one shaped like that. Sorry about the PM, Andy, I didn't see it.
I can't see it either. Ouch... I took the base of my old office chair and attached the bucket seat out of my old 1988 Chrysler Caravalle SE(before it went to the wrecker). They don't make them like this anymore... plenty of padding and you just sink right in. Nice and comfy.
Oh, and the other bucket seat is mounted to a wodden H style frame (cost about 20 bucks for the materials) and now sits in my living room. Better and cheaper than a recliner. Both seats were almost in mint condition.

Hope it's ok if I jump in here... My "homemade" home setup using kitchen cabinets and countertop just after putting it all together a few months back (total cost < $200), no way it is that clean now though.

I think I beat the price Brandon... I took my two , two drawer file cabinets and an old hallway door. Removed the doorknob of course... I needed the hole for the cables. :D
Lots of space...... if I could find any

This is the most important part of my office. I love it as it is (http://www.suntasticsoftware.com/office/office_008.jpg), though it could probably use some extensions.
Summary: high-creativity quarter, digital tools, wireless output, cool chromed body, inspiring contents, hard-drives squeezing tons/hours of pleasure from various exotic creations (for women and men alike). Plus: high capacity connection sink, wireless input tools, customized content creator and reloadable output features. Is there more?

What a fun thread. Sorry I'm late to the party.
I might be able to take the prize for most machines in a workspace. Since I work on infrastructure I keep enough hardware around to mimic the worldwide stuff.
My main workspace (http://www.traygames.com/misc/joe_office.jpg) has a local workstation, and remote access to my downstairs servers seen here from the front (http://www.traygames.com/misc/testnode_front.jpg) and back (http://www.traygames.com/misc/testnode_back.jpg). There are a few more off to the side that you can't make out very well in the pictures. Something like 14 total.

Don't tell me you develop Match-3 games, or I'll be close to stopping game development...
Heh, no. We've developed an infrastructure for hosting multi-player games. We're trying to forge a new space that you could call casual multi-player for lack of a better name.
The system is designed to be client-server, but the servers are spread all over the world at co-location centers. Keeps the costs of operation down, and makes it easy for us to scale up rapidly as the customer base grows. It also uses the 'google philosophy' of using a ton of relatively cheap machines so you get massive throughput, and building the system so that it assumes machines will die, so you get reliability.
It's a very cool system, self-healing, rapid expansion, smart fail-over, etc. But it takes a whole lot of machines to replicate it during development work. Things are awesome to work on now, but you can imagine what a nightmare I had on my hands about a year ago trying to debug stuff.

Yea... actually everyone on the team has one. First two places to put your money are your rear and your eyes. I'll take a good chair and a easy on the eyes monitor in exchange for half the CPU speed. Otherwise after 12-18 hour days I'm too crippled to move
The other place to put your money is a damn good matress and sheets, but that's another discussion.

Here's my home "wall of dev" (bcg50). Sorry for low quality, it's hard to put such a big picture in 40k.
I'm really missing L-like table forming a corner if put in the corner (wha?) so my hand could reach every single stuff of junk I have.
Right computer under the table is Amiga with a lot of cool stuff inside (PPC, CD-ROM, HDD, 2 gfx cards afair and special sound card). I don't use it a lot :(
I have couple of computers hidden under the bed, in the dregdrawer and in another room (and more monitors, TVs and all that sort of crap taking enormous amount of space).
Also, I definitely need to get a lamp on the table and upgrade my stinking AT '94 keyboard (no win keys!). Ok, closet has MS ergonomic wireless keyboard but it has some problems - I'm typing too fast for it. And it's PS/2 so this really also sucks. I'm missing scanner and Wacom. Not sure I've ever got a need for printer at home.
bcg_test pics show different kind of equipment I store in a closet :)
Ultra dark parts include Atari Jaguar and some oldskool rare stuff, too bad my NES is in the office since we use it a lot lately.
It would be a bad idea to post our office photo here since I'm not sure we are quite Indie...
It suprises me that I hardly see any joysticks and/or gamepads ?

I can't remember the last game I played on a PC that played better with a joystick over a mouse/keyboard combo. Joysticks/gamepads are pretty much dead in the PC arena.
Every shmup produced today is tuned to work best with a mouse.

EDIT: IIRC it doesn't have mouse support, so it was joypad vs keyboard :)

Stay: Is that a dollar sign on the white board? ;)
Haha, yes!
The previous day the NinjaBee guys were joking about how Marketing Types always have their "Flow Chart To Wealth" and all it has to have is some shapes and labels and arrows, and a big convincing DOLLAR SIGN and it will clearly be truth. The important part is the dollar sign.
So, we drew a chart while we joked about it, and then forgot it was there.
A couple of days later, when we looked at the pictures Jay had posted, we said "Oh NO! Our secret Flow Chart to Wealth has been revealed!"

That's the part of my office that's not cleaned up yet. You can't really tell because of the angle, but there's a full-sized supply cabinet, a large bookshelf, and a table with.... stuff... on it. Those are old 13-inch TV sets with composite and CGA inputs. :) I use them for my gaming consoles and 8-bit computers.. of which I have another entire room dedicated to. When I clean that area up, maybe I'll post some more pics.

Thanks... it's a custom-made corner desk made out of pine. The kitties keep me company sometimes, but most of the time they're either chasing the mouse cursor, trying to catch the atoms in Atomixer, chewing at cables or scratching on the wall unit behind my back because they want to get in.

Don't let the picture fool you.. I have two PCs with a KVM switch tucked underneath and they're so tightly packed that you need to be a kamasutra expert to snake your way around the things! you have a really nice home office, looks like mine. I also have a vamp2, guitar (ibanez), behringer mixer, a keyboard. I had the same Logitec speakers but I sold them and I now use a stereo receiver instead.

@mot: What's that poster right of your monitor?
Looks like an old adventure game.
It is from an old game, although I can't remember the name. Found it in MAME. There's a flying eagle on it and a captured Gorilla saying "please feed me bananas then I will show you what to do with vultures". I found that fascinating but never figured out how to play that game.

My "office" is too cluttered to post here, maybe if it was all my dev stuff I'd post, but some is misc dingbats.
Let's see, here's the stuff worth mentioning:
Tri screw bit (home made :) )
Big fat CRT Monitor (Primary, Compaq FS740)
Nice flat screen monitor (Secondary, Princeton VL1919)
Computer Tower (On floor, home made, blue) (With DVD Reader, DVD RW, and Floppy drives) (Known as D-COM)
Opened up Game Boy Advance (With the Tri screw bit of course)
MP3 / WMA / OGG player (iRiver iFP-880)
Nintendo DS Lite (Not opened :P)
Big Brain Academy

Case for EFA
Sound and USB connectors + Cabels
Wacom Tablet (CTE-430 [Saphire])
Amplified Speakers
CD Case
An old hard drive
A really really old graphics card (From the days before PCI XD)
Un connected webcam
Stack of recently used/blank CDs (on stand)

win+r (run)
win+f (find)
win+ctrl+f (find computer)
win+e (explorer)
win+d (show desktop - press again to pop all windows up again)
win+m (minimize all)
win+shift+m (undo "minimize all")
win+break (system properties)
and...
win, up, return, return (to shutdown the comp if anything crashed into the driver of my graphics card) ;)
edit: meh :P
lol! I only use Win-L to log-off quickly to hide my work. Good to know about the others :P
Btw, it's really sad that you can't define your own Win + Key definitions... that Windows key has been on keyboards since over 10 years now, but still it's only for predefined stuff...
@ZeHa
Scancode 219 for left windows and 220 for right windows, so you could write a program for it.
But, in Win XP (and maybe others):
Win+I : Internet
Win+E : Email
Win+Any other letter : Selects first/next start menu item with that name or starts only smi with that name
EG: I have Photo Impact XL SE and Pen Tablet pinned to my start menu, if I press Win+P is selects Photo Impact then if I do Win+P again it selects Pen Tablet.

AutoHotKey (http://www.autohotkey.com/) will let you do that and more. It's free and open source.

Seems like your office consists mainly of IKEA products ;)
I'm currently moving into my new office and almost all my stuff will be from IKEA as well.
I'll post some pictures as soon as I have actually moved in (at the end of the month).

Ok, we have almost completed moving into the new space ;)
So, here're some shots of my new "office":
http://www.steinke.net/images/office.png
It's basically all Ikea (besides the computer hardware). I used two tables to create a pretty large working area which I split into a "paper" and "electronic" side. The paper side is in front of the window and isn't really interesting (basically it's a blank table with pen&paper on it).
The electronic side isn't that interesting either - besides my new 22" monitor.
I also bought a nice chair with footrest (again: Ikea) in case I want to relax a bit reading or playing a game.
Neat. A nice contrast black, blue and red. ;)
Here's an update too, since it's been a couple years.

All in all it's about £2500 ($5000), I've done all the building prep myself (foundations etc) so I've saved a bundle on that. I'm also erecting the building myself and doing the interior decoration. Electricity is coming underground via the garage in armoured sheathing, and is isolated in both the garage and the shed. The alarm system is wireless with the main box secured within the house (no wires to cut).

Have a nice work in there! It's been 30 mins in the garden and 2 hours back in the office. I'm hoping the 30 mins manual labour every 2 hours will help to shift some of that belly I've developed sitting at a desk 24-7 (it's obviously not the copious amount of beer I drink). Actually exercise is quite addictive :)

I think they are all burning in the faux fire.

Well, I do that in my contiguous office, on the other side of the fireplace. Besides I have the intention of transitioning into a state where I can do all my work from that "office" ;)

The title is Mac Game Programming (http://www.amazon.com/Game-Programming-Premier-Press-Development/dp/1931841187).
It taught me the basics of mac multimedia/game progamming (Graphics, Sound, File System, Input etc...).
