View Full Version : "New Posts" in forum - what does that mean?

I've never been completely clear on what determines if a post is considered "new" (so it shows as bold in the listings, and shows in the results if I click "New Posts"). What specifically makes a post no longer "new"?

uh... after you see it, it's no longer new, since you saw it :-)

Sorry, that still doesn't clear it up for me. What do you mean by "after you see it"? Just seeing the topics listed in my browser doesn't do it (I can view a listing of the threads, close my browser, re-open the site, and the same threads are still shown as new). And it isn't just determined by viewing the contents of a thread. There are plenty of old threads that I've never looked at, but don't show as "new".

Surely there's some simple rule that determines when a topic is demoted from new to old.

Well, if you read a thread, it's no longer marked "new".

That is, until someone makes a new post in that thread, in which case it will be marked "new" once again.

So basically, threads only stop popping up as "new" when people stop posting to them.

Oh, and also, if things aren't behaving for you as I described above, it may be the result of:

1. Your cookies settings are strange.
2. You didn't close all of your browser windows before re-visiting the forum.

Hope this helps clear things up :)

Ryan,

Okay, that makes sense. But there must also be some period of time after which a thread becomes "not new". Like I said, there are threads that I've never viewed, but haven't been posted to in a while, that don't show as new.

I think my cookie settings are fine. Nothing seems to be working incorrectly, I was just curious as to how it determines if a post is new or not.

In my experience, if I come to the site and click the "New Posts" button and leave, when I come back next time there will be nothing new. I think it just marks everything new as "read" whenever you visit and leave.

Yeah, there is a timeout as well. After... maybe 30 minutes of inactivity (no thread reloading, browsing, etc...) it times you out.

Yeah, I think it's based on when you logout.. whether it's you explicitly logging out or, like the previous poster said, the system logs you out due to inactivity (which would be the case some time after you just simple exit your browser).

I don't know how it works exactly, but I know I've missed posts when using the New posts list. So now I never use it. (was on the old Dexterity forum I think, but I suppose that was the same configuration).

Do you keep hitting "new posts" even after you're done reading a batch of new posts? Sometimes posts happen while you are reading a batch of new posts. Having said that, I do realize that I occasionally miss a new post, but I always assumed it was a post that was created just as I was logging out.
