A few weeks ago I was in Chapters browsing through the business section and cursing myself for not having a list of recommended books on hand (and no way to access the net in Chapters.. bah) I found Donald Trump's Art of the Deal in softcover. This is a book that I considered picking up before, but I avoid hardcover books unless they are particularly large and contain a lot of reference material that I will get significant use from.
With the exception of the first chapter, which describes a week of his deals and drags on like a billionaire's Live Journal, it was a very interesting read. It's a biography with each chapter describing one of his major deals in detail. These deals include the creation of Trump Tower, his two casinos, his original plans for Television City, and his football team.
I was particularly fascinated by how he started out, how he dealt with people, and his tactics for getting ridiculously low prices on some things. He has a way of invisioning fantastically large projects and figuring out how to put the pieces together to make them actually happen. It's definitely given me some interesting ideas and new perspective on how to go about making deals.
This book was written a very long time ago so it's equally interesting to read up on how things are now and compare them with the book.
4/5 stars. There's not much reason to re-read it so borrowing it from a library is preferable to buying it.
