As I said a few times before Christmas, I've decided to spend a bit less time on my own projects and more time freelancing in 2009, not only for the money, but because I miss the exchange of ideas that comes with working with other people.

One of my priorities in February will be to put together a proper portfolio site, but in the meantime, I'll post a few pieces here, and a summary of what I can do for you.

2D Art: I can work in a variety of styles and media, but am better with animals, aliens, monsters, etc. than with people. My favourite style is cartoony, but not anime-style, and has a somewhat dark humour to it, like Where the Wild Things Are, or Spirited Away. I do pixel art, digital painting, vector, and hand-drawn charcoal or pen-and-ink.

Design: I've been working as a graphic designer for five years. I specialize in layout and typography, though I can also do logo design, UI, etc.

Writing: As well as doing copywriting as part of my graphic design work, I have three years experience teaching English to adults and children. In any case, I think most regulars of this forum have read enough of my posts to know that I write very well. Whether you're looking for tutorial text, marketing materials, dialogue, design docs, press releases, or whatever else, I can write it for you quickly, creatively and at a very reasonable rate - by the hour or by the word, depending on the nature of the work. I can also do editing and French-to-English translation. Writing samples on request.

I've done work for several members of this forum already, all of whom were very pleased and have told me that they would be happy to serve as references. PM me for their email addresses if you wish to ask them any questions.

Email me at { alex (at) benefactum (dot) ca } for quotes, references, or more examples of my work.

Here are some examples of my work:

Pixel art:

From my latest WIP.

Digital painting:

For another of my games, Halls of the Deepfathers

Vector art:

From one of my board games. The game features fictitious hybrid beasts, mash-ups of two real-world animals. This is a stork + porcupine = storkupine.

UI:

This started as a project for an IndieGamer member, but his previous artist returned to the project right after I started, so it didn't end up in the game. I liked it, so I decided to keep it as a portfolio piece. Eventually, all the buttons would have different icons - I just used the lightning bolt on the first two to show its normal and "pushed" states. The lower screen would probably have some kind of HUD or mini-map.

Your digital painting is really neat.
