Is it anything to with developing games and/or running an independent game company?

And is English your first language? Seems like it might be the 479th.

It's an abortion. It also has popups.

Since no one else seems capable of giving real feedback without being total dicks...
I like the colors a lot, always been a fan of grey.
Music is a big no no in my book, it can be annoying. Even worse, I couldn't figure out how to turn it off.
The sub pages are pretty big, think about optimising them a bit (the About Us page in particular is very large)
The biggest issue is that there's no information showing what the page is all about. I realize it says it's a cummunity site, but does that mean news, forums, what? If it's primarily forums you should try to integrate them into the site a bit more.
Otherwise it looks like it's off to a great start.
Not sure about popups, I use opera and did not get any.

Now I know that his post is spam, and it really has nothing to do with anything here, and that it has popups, and the language wasn't particularly good, however, that doesn't mean you need to resort to juvenile attacks, Applewood and Ricardo. You're both lucky I'm not a mod.

My bad. I'll try to be a better mollycoddler in the future.

It's general chat. He should be free to chat about whatever he wants, without getting insulted.

Heh. I don't think he has any intention of "chatting".

I don't either. I still don't think the insults were appropriate. If this place turns into gamedev.net, I'm going to be very disappointed.

I'd have vaped the thread before it even got to post #2 in the old days. Sigh.

Well, I don't make insulting comments very often if at all. I was asked my opinion on his site and gave it.
If my comments are no longer required, I'll gladly leave of my own accord.

to be fair Applewood, your comments were hardly constructive. Imagine you asked for feedback on a game you worked on and someone just replied "It's an abortion".
It doesn't help in any way.

Sorry, I disagree.
The site was a total mess imo - there was such a long list of basic stuff wrong with it, why should I spend time listing them out when he clearly hasn't done so himself. I don't often make remarks like this - only when I feel they're justified. I will continue to do this when neededm though it's rare for me to look in the first place if I'm honest.
People moan here about comments like mine and this board turning into gamedev. My beef is people constantly asking for "how does this look" on things that are clearly unfinished/crap and they just want some attention. I don't see this board being for namby pambying wannabes either.
Anyone wants to moderate anything I say, I'll be gone forever (yeah I know, no big loss) - but that's how you end up with just a load of people patting each other on the back and getting nowhere.
I preferred it when this board was only intelligent questions about "how do I do this thing that shouldn't be immediately obvious to anyone who spent time thinking about it"

I agree it's annoying when people's first posts are "what do you think of this". Even worse when it's in the wrong forum.
I'd like to see some kind of system where you can't start a thread in the feedback requests forum unless you've offered feedback to other people. Otherwise we're going to end up with a bunch of people asking for feedback and no-one getting any. When I have time I like to try and offer constructive criticism to people because I'd hope they'd do the same for me.
If the best bit of advice you can offer someone is "it's an abortion" then don't offer any. Saves you getting flack for unhelpful comments, saves the people on the receiving end being upset with unhelpful comments and everyone is happier.
Do you really think your comments helped in any way?

Well than don't post and leave the replies for someone who IS going to spend time listing out the things that are wrong and how to make them better. Over the past month this forum has gone the way of gamedev and its getting worse...
As for my feedback of the site... every time I click the above link I get "Cannot find server" message, but I'll keep checking and if it comes up I'll give you my constructive criticism.

Considering that
1) The person who posted the link was pretty obviously on a spamming spree (I'd put money on that very link showing up on a few gaming sites we all know of today),
and
2) it's pretty obviously a young kid, judging by the atrocious quality of the writing and the fact that he's using a .tk domain (yes, I know there arew many respectable people using .tk, but in my experience, kids and wannabes make up the majority of the userbase, at least where gaming sites are concerned)
Then yeah, perhaps telling him it's an abortion, or that his English is pathetic, will make him either work harder on the site, or at least will convince him that we're all a bunch of mean bastards and not spam here again. It's a win-win. I save the constructive advice for people who're actually serious about their work.

Doesn't matter wether he's spamming, he's 12 years old, he's in it for a laugh or whatever. Your comment's didn't help at all and those type of comments are what makes the gamedev and flipcode forums so painful.
Let's try and keep the comments to helpful ones.
Never heard the phrase "if you've got nothing nice to say then don't say anything"?

Actually, its having a majority of those kinds of people *on* the boards which makes em so bad. I'm all for a closed list, meself.
Last time I looked this board was supposed to be a meeting point for serious game developers trying to get on and share knowledge/experience.
I'm afraid if I want to look at "look at my site, I just learned jscript (or whatever) and aren't all these things cool" message, then I'll go elsewhere. Well, hey - I just realised I don't need to - I can read em right here and I'm supposed to encourage these people.
f**k this! If *I* were a mod, I'd delete the original post and the poster and get this board back to why we're here. I'm leaving pretty soon now (when this thread dies) - gonna find a site where professionals hang out. I thought this was it. I'm not a bad guy, I just have no patience for spammers.
Just for the record, here's a by no means exhaustive list of what I think is wrong with the site:
1) Text is very very badly written, full of spelling mistakes and bad grammar
2) Graphics are all too in-yer-face and distracting. No need for all that animation
3) I couldn't tell what the site was for at all
4) The music is bad - and even good music wouldn't be welcome
5) The layout is a mess - looks like a bunch of icons dropped onto a table
6) It has pop-ups, at least according to IE.
7) It loaded pretty slowly
So, thats the presentation, purpose, text, graphics and sound all crap. There seems little point in me listing each spelling error and why should I, what exactly has this thing got to do with indie anything, let alone business.
I must say even as jaded as I am, I'm surprised to see far more people against what I said than for it. But then again, that's why I visit here less and less often. This little bit of flaming has at least brightened up my day.

i don't remember if this is already happening... but shouldn't the forum display a notice to users who are about to register saying something like:
"This forum is strictly for discussion by game developers and those who are interested in becoming game developers, or those interested in the independent shareware business in general. Any other discussion by ungenuine (is that a word?) users is not appreciated. Thank you."
i'm sure that will turn off most of these people who are spamming or whatever.

Rather than invite only, why not just have the first few posts moderated?
Does vBulletin allow for that?

I do. I certainly expect a verbal lashing like the one the thread starter received if I ever start expressing myself in the way he did ;)
