2. Jet Set Willy (ZX Spectrum)
3. Bruce Lee (C64)
4. Bubble Bobble (Arcade)

Numbers 1, 4 and 5 take me back to the good old days when too much time was spent in the dark, smokey, back room of our local snooker club which was filled with the best arcade games you could imagine.
I still can't get the Rygar theme tune out of my head to this day :D

I'll take a stab at it. Not gonna bother trying to rank them, though. My primary criteria would be how much fun I had playing it and how long it kept my interest.
GTA San Andreas

Duke Nukem 3D (deathmatch)
Team Fortress Classic
Legend of Zelda
Hmm, I guess I'm gonna go over 5
Street Fighter 2 Turbo (SNES)

1. Turrican 2 (c64)
2. Quake3 Arena (pc online, still playing it after 9years)
3. Super Mario (NES)
4. Galaga (no on the wii-virtual console )
5. Tetris (classic on any console)
These games picked because of their mostly technical or game-design brilliantness.
I still play Quake3 regulairly, as I find it one of the best online multiplayer team games available.
The other 4 games are all still playable in this day and age inbetween the great games that now use textures bigger then the original game files of the classics.

Silkworm was the Amiga version. I played it every day with a friend for a year and a half, every day after school. We did eventually beat it ;) It was arcade gaming at its best.
Wow, I've never heard of any of those games. I'll have to look them up and see what I've missed.
Blood is a great PC shooter like Duke, but what was really great was the multiplayer. It was just so well balanced. But, the multi doesn't work so well now.
The rest are Amiga games. Hired Guns is the classic of all classics. If you like Dungeon Master clones, it'll suck you in and never let go. You can check out Uridium 2 legally on an Amiga emulator (the dev released it for free) and Cosmic Pirate is... well, quite old, back from '89. Well worth checking out, though.
Man, I could name so many more... :p

Best:
1- Legacy
2- Starcraft
3- Fallout (1 & 2)
4- Settlers 2
5- Diablo 1
worst:
Phantasmagoria
I always remember Microprose's Legacy - Realms of Terror' fondly. It's an old DOS game from early nineties. Unfortunately I lost the original box sometime after becoming a windows user. Thanks to this thread I got inspiration and did some web-search :) 'The Legacy' is now abandonware and should be possible to run on some DOS emulator. Link to abandonware (http://www.abandonwaredos.com/abandonware-game.php?gid=MTA4MA==)
After playing the Legacy I wanted more of the same experience and bought the promising "Phantasmagoria". That was a big huge disappointment. Just a linear plot to follow. Doesn't even deserve to be called a game IMO. Was buggy too.

It would be interesting to see the rankings for all of the games mentioned in this list.
Too tough to pick the best, but these all stick out memorably:
Dark Omen
Dungeon Keeper
Final Fantasy 6
Pool of Radiance (original)
Torment
I used to have to wait 10-20 minutes for PoR to start up on the c64. Every time we died, we had to restart the computer. I'm glad games don't have that problem anymore :)

In no particular order, these are games that hold a special place in my heart and I've put 1000's of hours into:
1. Mr. Do (Atari) Just loved the zen-like state I could get into and the options over just a simple Dig-Dug clone.
2. Gyruss (arcade) My friends would have to pull me away.
3. Jumpman (Atari) Hands down, one of THE BEST platformers EVER MADE, period.
4. Street Fighter II (arcade) Countless hours, a few tournaments and I've still got game after all these years.
5. R-Type (arcade) Showed how to take the shooter to "the next level" and really solidified the term "boss monster" in my mind.
Some runners up:
1. Peggle (PC) Holy crap what a great piece of software. Take something dead simple, execute it well and sprinkle crack on it.
2. Quake 3 Area (PC) Addicting, raw, muscle-car-like combat.
3. Thunderforce III (Genesis/Mega Drive) Wow! One of the most inventive side-scrollers ever made and works so hard, it makes your Sega burn.
4. Mr. Robot & His Robot Factory & Lode Runner (Atari) Same reasons... great platforming and (gasp) an editor!
5. Super Mario 3. The pinnacle of Mario-ness, period.
One thing I find interesting about these responses, very few "indie games" are mentioned.

If we're talking indie games then two I zone out in are Galcon and Jurassic Realm. I have an unnatural love for both of those titles.
Can't say they're in my top five of all time, though. I played too many simple C64 and Amiga games as an impressionable kid. Actually back then games were more "indie" because if you programmed a simple game you could generally get a publisher to box it up.
Ok, games that have affected me culturally or just wasted the most of my time (in no particular order):
X-Com: Terror From the Deep (yes, the sequel is better than the first. DARE TO ARGUE WITH ME! :). I still play this today)
Starcraft
Virtua Fighter 2 (it was the only game I played for several years)
Virtual On (VERY few people understand how to play this game properly. At high levels of play, there is IMMENSE strategy)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (story not as good as 1 or 3 IMHO, but it's the best overall in the series)
Runners up (many of these would end up on the above list if given more than 5 slots):
Pretty much all the Metal Gears (MGS1 and 3 tied for best story IMHO, MGS3 was best in mechanics until 4 came along)
Warcraft 2 (barely beat out by Starcraft... Beating a good Orc player with Humans was LEEEEEEEEEEET...!)
Myth 1 and 2 (HIGHLY UNDERRATED AND MISUNDERSTOOD RTS)
Magic the Gathering (Microprose; I'm glad someone else put this, too! I used to pwn people online on the TEN network with my perma-stasis deck! LOL...)
Quake 1/Quakeworld (the best multiplayer of the series... Hated 2 and thought 3 was too watered down. Haven't even tried 4)
Most of the Shinobis
Nights into Dreams (finding the infinite link chain in every level == awesome fun)
Zelda: OOT and Zelda: LTTP (haven't cracked open TP yet)
Baku Baku Animal (the only puzzle game I ever tried to get good at)
Gunstar Heroes (treasure. period.)
Radiant Silvergun (treasure. period.)
Samurai Shodown 2 and 3 (2 for its perfect balance, and 3 for its refined interface and better visuals)
Blade Runner (most of you will disagree with me on this one, but I've beaten that game like a million times... I was really into it back in the day)
Most of the old-school Street Fighters
Mortal Kombat 1 Beta, and Mortal Kombat 2
As you can see, I have a console/arcade slant as that was what I grew up with. I didn't get my first PC until X-Com 2 came out... That's one hell of an initiation into PC gaming, eh? :)
Also, there are some notable games that probably SHOULD be on my list, but I still haven't gotten around to playing them yet (like Super Metroid). I have a long queue of games I still need to get through. *sigh*

Yes this is really hard ... so many games I love(d)
I'll just name some games that I think no one else chose but I really love(d):
The original Far Cry for PC ... I loved the scenery and how it made me feel I was on vacation at a tropical island ... shooting things for fun :)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PC) !! Again the scenery was amazing .. the armor sets and weapons were cool ... riding on horseback exploring the wilderness was relaxing ... and the the user created mods really improved the game. I haven't had the chance to finish it yet though.
Counter-Strike!
Battlefield 2 ... piloting blackhawks and raiding the other team's spawn point.. having your teammates mow them down with the miniguns ... and also piloting the bombers and getting 5-6 kills in one bombing run ... this game is still the best of its kind! (never played the newer battlefield though)
Special mentions:
- FlatOut 2 for PC << amazing racing game
- Test Drive Unlimited
- Master of Orion 1 & 2
- XCom 1 & 2
- Heroes of Might and Magic 1, 2, 3, 4 (somehow 5 was no fun at all)
- Bioshock
- XWing / Tie Fighter
- Yes, Homeworld was extremely well done
- Half-Life
- Fallout
- Syndicate and Syndicate Wars
- GTA Vice City .. cause it was the only GTA I could be bothered to finish
Haven't got to play the new XBox 360 or PS3 games yet .. if I had I might have added Mass Effect too .. looks like the kind of game I like.
There sure is ;) You are talking about the Saturn version though, right?
I played Virtual On a ton, both in the arcades (where it was big in my area for a while) and on the Saturn.
I also have the Dreamcast version (which is a port of the arcade sequel), but by the time that game had come out I had moved on to other games. That said, my friend (who is one of the best VO players I've ever seen) said that the sequel was even better. One of these days I'll have to dig it up and give it an honest try.
I hear there is still a Saturn community that plays the Netlink version online these days. Lemme know if you wanna meet up! I've still got my Saturn, LOL...
The sims
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Little Big Adventure 1&2
Out of this World (Another world)
Mafia
only 5 is unfair ;)
Broken Sword I & II & II
Grim Fandango
Dugeon keeper I & II
Populous I and II
Metal Gear (all of them)
Tomb raider (all of them)
Black & white
Sim City (all of them)
Harvest moon
doom
quake
And a big etc.......
There's something about all of these great games, you didn't need the best hardware to play them smoothly they were original and fun, nowadays it's all about graphics, "me too" products, or mindless stuff (most casual games) without any substance, that you can easily forget.

[/LIST]Never played online though, I used to play it in offline duels against the computer like some sort of very complex solitaire.
Indeed, the AI was pretty damn impressive (all bugs aside) for such a complex game.
Surprisingly, this was my first exposure to MtG. I don't even know why I bought it; I had no idea whether or not I would like the game, having no experience with the CCG.
I ended up playing it for 24 hours straight that day... When you consider how generally crappy the presentation and UI was, that's a hell of a testament to the design of the CCG.
One thing I find interesting about these responses, very few "indie games" are mentioned.
Maybe because most indie games don't deserve those positions ? There are a lot of nice, fun indie games but truly awesome "indie games" that can compete with the classics are non existent in my opinion. Yeah they are nice for a few weeks at most but you'll forget about them once a new one pops up. Unless you consider doom and half life as indie games.

I would say that most of the old-school classics are pretty much indie - as in created by a very small team with only a single programmer and shoestring budgets.
My top 5:
Diablo 2
Dark Omen
Hexen II
Tekken III
Guild Wars
1) Counter-Strike Source
2) Baldur's Gate
3) Deus Ex
4) Grim Fandango
5) Planescape: Torment
Spiegel
06-17-2008, 04:05 PM
1) X-Com : UFO Enemy Unknown (best game ever made)
2) Final Fantasy X (120h spent doing EVERY single thing in this game)
3) Starcraft (Its a damn classic)
4) Bomb Jack (first game I ever played, at the age of 4)
5) Every damn Dizzy game for Spectrum (nice way to loose my childhood)
Runner ups:
Metal Gear Solid (PSone)
Target: Renegade (Spectrum 128k)
Shinning Force II (Megadrive)
Xecutor (Spectrum 48k)
GTA Vice City(PS2)
Crusader : No Remorse (PC)
And so many other spectrum games that were left behind in time...

I don't think it is a fair comparison, older title like Civ, Master of Orion and SimCity weren't that much different from Indies today. Hell, when Electronic Arts started they put disks in a zip lock bag with a pretty art printout!!

It is amazing to look at some of the big companies in their infancy.

But when I play a game today, I don't think "Wow, this game would have been awesome 12 years ago".

In reverse chronological order, because I couldn't hope to order them in order of quality.
Metal Gear Solid 4
Resident Evil 4
Star Ocean : The Second Story
Final Fantasy VII
Laser Squad
EDIT: And Laser Squad is now and was then about as Indie as you can get.

ROFL! Well... I recently got out Dune II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_II) and played it again and it shocked me how much was missing that I now consider basic features. So it works both ways.

Masters of Orion/Masters of Orion 2 (very disappointed by 3)
Baulder's Gate 1/2 (3 was terrible)
PvP Everquest (before the expansions started coming out, havent really enjoyed another MMO since then)
Dune 2 on an old console (remember thinking "they can just stop making games now, theres no way anything could be cooler than this!")
Fallout 2 (played 2 before 1, could never really get into 1 :( )
Every few years Ill fire up one of those games and try to recapture the magic of playing them the first time.

This thread has been a psycological test to see what kinds of games developers make versus the games that they like to play.
Thank you all for your participation!

I was just thinking the same thing (and kind of what I was getting at with the "very few indie" comment).

OMG, another good one.
Sullon Zek Good Team, represent! LOL... EQ PVP had some really good mechanics until the single player game started going all uber and ruining the PVP balance.

Vallon Zek here. God that was fun. Gangs of of elves and gnomes (I think the highest level was around 20) battling back and forth for control of Greater Feydark and Butcherblock, recruiting really low level suicide teams to distract the guards. Nobody cared about equipment or levels since you were going to loose experience all the time and you needed to PvP naked anyway...Good times.
