Hi all,
Lately I've been helping some friends start blogs and forums in the process I have basically hit a nice deal with my host that would make it beneficial for me to expand the 'business'.
Basically I'm offering people who are interested a forum and blog as well as a domain for what I consider a fairly low price point.
So at a setup fee (of the price of the domain name, usually about $9) and $2 - $5 a month depending on how much bandwidth your site uses as well as how much storage you take up. You can upload HD media as well as your games files and all that with virtually unlimited bandwidth. If you are actually able to reach the bandwidth limit then chances are you’re going to be making zillions of dollars soon.
I can host games files of any *reasonable* size, I'm going to trust you on this, no artificial limit will be in place. On top of that I can help start a blog as well as a forum though I stop short at web design. In all honesty I think for indie dev websites are a bit too bothersome, blogs can get the point across quickly and easily.
All I ask is payment for the domain name (usually around the $9 mark for a .com) and at least $2 every month after that and up to $5 a month depending on bandwidth guzzling, though definitely no more than $5, iron clad guarantee. You can drop out of the plan anytime as well.
The blog will be in wordpress and forums in phpbb3. I can install any theme you find on top of a whole bunch I already have installed. For an idea of wordpress themes look here: topwpthemes.com. You can just pick one, link it to me and I'll have it up asap.
You can also host videos, trailers and all that through your wordpress (it lets you upload them), again it will be under a fair use policy. Yes you can upload HD trailers of your games and what have you, I have zero problems with that, but I'm going to be mildly upset if I wake up one day and find 4 gigabytes of lesbian porn :D.
Please note I'm mostly charging for a share of the hosting plan and a little premium for my services, it's not so hard to setup a blog and forum, you won’t have direct access to the ftp though you can upload almost anything through wordpress (including videos and the like).
I’m no pro at doing this so I could screw up royally, but I’ve already made a couple of sites run fine: botlbrush.com nerdsandgeeks.cn Just don't expect anything super awesome from me, I'll do what I'm advertising, no more, no less.
Just to clarify: I'm not selling webhosting space or bandwidth, just providing a blogging/forum service at the cheap and asking you pay your fair share of bandwidth usage. It's definitely cheaper to other commerical enterprises and hopefully will be more suited to game devs than your typical '250 mb, 5 gig bandwidth, $10 a month' plans.
