A wise and well-written article. Point 7, "Embrace newcomers," particularly struck me. The hostility some experienced gamers show toward online newbies is usually fixable by a sensible design that rewards veterans in some way for aiding newcomers. For instance, the MMO City of Heroes has a "sidekick/exemplar" system that permits and rewards team-ups by characters of different levels; this could possibly be translated from character level to player experience.
This is also an issue of community management. Different games foster different forum cultures, and the ones that are humane and civil didn't get that way by accident.

This is probably the biggest one. Few other hobbies or sports lead to as much swearing, abuse and general yobbish behaviour as online gaming.
I agree. Way too much swearing and macho posturing.
