I'm currently working on a casual game for portals, and I'd really like to set the resolution at 1024x768 rather than the standard 800x600.
Will portals accept games in this resolution, or will they ask me to change the resolution to 800x600? Just as importantly, do you think this will this have a noticeable effect on my sales?

Our past few games have all been 1024x768 and it has not been a problem for customers or portals.
Hope this helps...

I am fallowing the lead of Scorpio on this one. Build-a-lot was extremely successful with its 1024 X 768 rez. That is what I am using for my new games. Well, that is the rez the art is designed for. I actually plan to use whatever resolution the desktop is set to and let the 3D hardware scale the images up or down as needed. This will also make it easier to support different aspect ratios. If not with extra art on the wide screens then at least with black bars on the sides so that nothing gets distorted. This seems to be what the PopCap framework does. When Peggle runs full screen it keeps the rez the same as your desktop was even though it create a Direct3D full screen excusive mode surface.

We made "G.H.O.S.T. Hunters: The Haunting of Majesty Manor" at 1024 x768. I've noticed that recently released "Miss Teri Tale" used a higher resolution of 1280 x 1024. I believe "Dream Day Wedding" also used a resolution higher than 1024 x 768.

I can see the merits of going 1280x1024; I believe it's the most common monitor resolution right now, actually, though I have no idea if that is true for the casual gamer demographic. I certainly doubt it's 800x600 anymore.
