Here's some demo footage of the game I'm working on. It uses 3D geometry but nicks the 2D sprites from the original game. For now I'm currently working on a smaller demo-like version of the game called 'Survival Edition' where your goal is to basically survive as more and more zombies come at you.
The game will be released with a built in level editor, everything you see in this video was made using it. It's quite easy to use, kind of like Crysis where you place everything wherever you want and instantly spawn in. Difficulty is auto-adjusted based on three things: rate at which zombies spawn, from how far away the zombies give chase and how many zombies are allowed to be spawned at any one time. You can see an even older video of the level editor here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6c07vCmPnNg
I might work on a more fleshed out game with the classic gameplay mode and more weapons but that's subject to the feedback I get for this one. Also making games for free doesn't pay for my college books (sadly) and quitting work to do it doesn't help either =(
Just a note that on my website you can see some 3D models of the zombies, they're not going to be used in this game due to technical reasons (not limitations, just reasons).

Coming along nicely and something a bit different here for a change - cool! :)

haha cheers :) It was actually some problems with the 3D models that got me doing them like this.
I'm actually kind of freaking out now, I submitted the video to gametrailers and as of last count it has scored 9000+ hits and its barely been up for a day: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/171675.html?playlist=featured
The curse of expectations...
I was thinking of charging for it but I'm worried about copyright violations haha. I was just wondering if it would be something anyone would pay money to play.

If you want to sell it later then yes you will probably have to change the name, but if it were me I'd see how you get with it as it is for now.

And change the artwork as well if you are using ripped graphics. In the eyes of the law there's no difference between this and pirating games. The joy of copyright!

I haven't played the original, but if i liked something in this video is the music :-). The graphics are okish, but some spooky lighting would add a lot.

As said above, you'll have to change the graphics and name were appropriate to avoid friendly neighborhood lawyers;)
Nice video anyway, I especially liked the way the boxes moved as a zombie came from underneath, kind of a combination of retro and new :)

Judging from the responses (volume and favorable), quite possibly, provided you can make it your own (and not just on a legal standpoint) while keeping the key classic elements and references that would attract fans of the game in the first place.
A good idea would be giving good demos or a free version (thus getting feedback before creating a purchasable version) and keeping the eyes and attention you've already gained on the project throughout until completion.

I guess I'll see how it goes. I do really want to make a buck off this, I dunno how much it could make but I'm going to give it my very best shot :D I'll definitely try and find some 2D artists to help with the characters and will probably release a very comprehensive demo of the game soon.

hey guys, I just made a new trailer for the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad832jaHUsQ
I'm really looking for feedback on how you think the game is coming along and really looking for any new ideas or features.
For some reason I tend to overlook obvious/cool ideas which is where the generel public comes in :D

Great progress as ever, and consistent progress too. Also, is that pennywise I see? This won't help the stereotype of clowns 'being scary' thats for sure!:p

I just typed in clown into google and pasted inthe first clown pic, it did look inexplicably evil so I dunno :P

Yeah, after doing the same, (assuming you used the the forth image at the top) it's definitely pennywise from the stephen king film/book 'It':D

Fade stuff out when too close to camera (trees, etc).
More importantly, add trampolines right away. And lawnmowers. Second player too. Oh, and giant babies.
Once you've got that all that in and working, feel free to continue with trivialities like the level editor :)

The level editor is an integral part of the game, do not patronise its importance :P
I've been toying around with the idea of having the treets and other objects fade out when in the way (not hard to do) buuuuuuuuut, I'm still debating the merits of such a technique. I mean the whole point of the trees is to block your view after all :D
Also not sure about the giant baby, I never got that far in the game :o

hey guys, I put together a quick pre-alpha demo: http://thatsgames.com/downloads/zamnprealpha.exe
it's still really rough around the edges but it's playable, I suggest sticking to the level editorfor th etime being, you can play the game through the level editor too so no problems.
Just be sure to read the readme after downloading it, make sure you have the latest version of directx and physx installed too =)

well I've 'finished' the game: http://thatsgames.com/downloads/zamndemofixed.exe
It has three levels plus a level editor.
Finished in the sense about 90% of the features I wanted to put in it ended up being about 30% complete :( Which is a shame, I even made a system which sets things on fire... bleh.
Well it was a learning experience I suppose.
Will probably get around to fleshing it out some more as the years go by.
Now back to making 'cute' games, women are actually turned on by cute kiddy games :D
