My Game Company is celebrating the 4th anniversary of our popular dress-up game for girls with the release of Fashion Cents Deluxe. This enhanced version provides many new features and is available for the first time ever on Mac OS X and Linux, as well as Windows.

Like the original game, Fashion Cents Deluxe gives you a wide assortment of hats, tops, bottoms, and shoes in a variety of colors and styles. Your objective is to combine these items into complete outfits that are color coordinated. White, black, and denim items are wild; they go with any other color. You score bonus points by adding accessories like glasses, purses, necklaces, jackets, scarves, and pets, or by completing successive outfits for a large combo bonus. If you create enough outfits, you can advance to the next level, which adds more colors and styles of clothes for you to play with.

Nice work Troy, did you use GL for this game or just normal 2D?

Thanks! I used OpenGL. There's no way I could pull off the alpha blending and anti-aliasing in SDL and still get decent performance on all platforms.

Are you aware of the Vista/OpenGL problems on some ATI cards? For example, my Radeon 9600 with Vista doesn't like OpenGL apps at all. A bit of googling reveals its quite a widespread problem.

Fair enough, the 9600 is quite old now but aside from the GL thing it works fine. That said, going back to Nvidia soon.

Yeah I have a 9700 on my laptop and linux wont hibernate because the ATI drivers are so bad. (Dirk Dashing runs fine though!). ATI can't seem to make a decent driver to save their lives.

ATI can't seem to make a decent driver to save their lives. Its only a couple of years ago that I was saying exactly that about Nvidia.

Yeah, I know about that. But I don't have time to write or maintain two separate code bases, so I chose OpenGL because it's cross-platform. The way I look at it, the Vista/ATI issue is ATI's problem. Or perhaps Microsoft's. If someone using Vista+ATI has a problem with the game, I'll point them to ATI. That's about all I can do at this point.

Besides, I get more Mac sales than Windows sales. So if this becomes a big issue (with more users starting to use Vista and ATI not having resolved its problems), then I'll drop Windows before I drop Mac. I refuse to write the game twice (once in DirectX and once in OpenGL) and maintain both versions, especially when I only have 10-15 hours per week to work on the game company.

I have tried the game, not my cup of tea but gave it a good old play anyway:) yeah nice work and i can see you making some nice dollar from it although i ran into a couple of problems here,

The main music was really jumpy and kept cutting out (this would put any potential customer off buying it and it's the 1st time i've had problems with sound in a game).

The box at the top with items in didnt respond all that well to me as i was trying to drag the items out and i found my self having to go back to try and drag them out 3 times (sometimes i could select an item NP then other times it wouldnt let me do it) maybe i was trying to drag them out too fast?

I have the following specs,
WinXP Pro
P4 2.4
1gb ram
SoundMAX digital audio

Good luck with it!!!

Darren.

Thanks for the report, Dyno Kid! The audio problem is a new one. FCD uses the same engine as Dirk Dashing (basically a wrapper around SDL_mixer), and I haven't heard of any audio issues before with Dirk. And none of the beta testers reported a problem with audio. I'll have to see if I can acquire a SoundMAX card from somewhere...
