There is no snobbery here. Whoever did that translation speaks better English than I do Japanese, but that's totally irrelevant. Zero Wing's publishers were big enough to employ a proper translator but they didn't do it, which shows a certain lack of at best professionalism and at worse, respect.

Right now, we're writing a game that's primarily for the Japanese market and we're incurring significant cost to get the text done properly. And we're an indie firm of 4 people ffs. There's no excuse for making your game look shite in the country you intend selling it in.

On a lighter note, you have no idea how hard it is for me to keep AYB quotes out of the credits list for this game. Our loading screen said "Main screen turn on" for a while :)

All this is reminding me of Backstroke of the West (http://winterson.com/2005/06/episode-iii-backstroke-of-west.html)... an example of what happens when you subtitle the third Star Wars episode in a foreign language and then translate it back into English.

One of the silliest things I've ever seen, and utterly hilarious.

Actually this thread has reminded me of something I been thinking of for a while. Organising a pool of native speakers for translating indie games, dunno if this has already been done. Translation can be expensive especially for not so popular languages. A thread like programmers for hire could be started with people offering their translation skills.

Their are some languages I would like our stuff translated to but doubt I will ever justify the cost. I don't think it is acceptable to think the world should all learn english...esperanto maybe ;)

When we had one of your games localized into many different languages I included the English string “all your base are belong to us” in the text to be localized into French, Italian, German, and the rest. I thought the translators would get a big kick out of it and have a nice laugh. Instead they just included it in a list of many strings they had questions about. Their comment for that string just said something like “Is that even proper English?”
