I signed up for Amazon's Simple Storage Service a while ago, and have just now started to play around with it. My question to those who are using it, is what kind of performance are you getting on downloads?

I was expecting better, but I get a download range of about 180-280KB/sec with S3. On the other hand, my $9.95/month hosting service does downloads at about 600-800KB/sec. Repeating the tests over on different days have yielded similar results. Tests were done with a cable modem.

Anyway, just wondering what other people's experience with the S3 system have been.

We are also using S3 and we are seeing better download rates than you.

Depending of where we do the test (from the US, Europe or Asia), we get between 300Kbs to 700Kbs. (the best being in the US)

Amazon just released an SLA (http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=379654011) but they don't mention anything about bandwidth.

I suppose they cape it but I don't know at what rate,

Hope this help

Another thing is that although your S3 download is only 180-280 I bet it will stay like that even if there's 100 people downloading the file whilst your $10 webhost download rate will quickly fall as multiple people download the file.
