Firstly we test with staff and a few friends, then we open up to our community members.

On my first real project I worked on it in part with another community so I had an easy access to beta testers.

My one piece of advice is that you get more beta testers than you believe you need. In my case the top 2 beta testers did more work than all the others (There were 10) combined. So you may get some really good helpers, or you may never hear from some people after they ask to help.

I posted on a game news site which ended up being carried on a few foreign news sites too. Ended up with a lot of Swedish testers :)

The site was http://www.insidemacgames.com, which is of course mac-specific so probably doesn't help you. But I'm sure there must be PC variants out there.
