There's been a few discussions on the business side where basically one or more of us refer posters to getting proper legal advice.

However, legal advice is expensive, and not just any lawyer will do. I'm betting it isn't just us that have found that one out.

Can anyone here recommend a lawyer in their country who would be affordable and could give the right advice to some people here?

I do know a good solicitor or two in the UK, but cheap they are not. Still, they can save you money in the long run. One case saved us many times more money than we have paid out in legal fees in total over ten years, so it can be worthwhile.

Edit: To be clear, we already have good legal representation and I'm asking on behalf of the many people who don't. Although we do sometimes pick and choose depending on what we're doing, generally we use Nik White at Brabners (Liverpool) for game contracts and other Brabners staff for other contracts.

This is a case where I'd suggest you contact your local IGDA chapter and see if they dont have anyone on board.

The NW England chapter of IGDA has some accountants and solicitors as members if I recall (cant remember the names off the top of my head).

There are some law-related services for shareware developers that are frequently advertised in the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) newsletter. Some of them offer discounts and/or free consultations for ASP members. One that I see repeatedly in every issue is this one:

www.tm4smallbiz.com (http://www.tm4smallbiz.com/) - provides trademark and intellectual property protection services

Check out Tom - he is a good guy and is interested in helping indies. He doesn't over charge either.

I'd have suggested Tom, but he's in the US and I'm guessing would be inundated with developers without any money. :)

He's a great bloke though, has a really nifty cadillac too.

Ask him about Jay Moore of GG and the trip to springfields seedier areas :)
