Just want to throw this idea out there: currently the forum relies on .... well, mostly goodwill, to pay for it.

I use another forum about motorbikes (UKGSer) where you can donate sum paltry some each year as a "subscription". It marks you out as a serious community member and lets you post adverts for stuff.

How's about we adopt something similar here? Just a $10 paypal donation or something towards all the hassle and upkeep. Then lock down the posting rights in News & Announcements to subscribers maybe as an incentive to donate. And you get another cute little badge next to your name!

I would gladly pay a small subscription fee because I know such things improve the overall seriousness of things.

//ok I didn't read it good enough .. I wouldn't make people pay for news & announcements.. I would make them pay to access most of the forum.

OTOH that can create entitlement issues... "I *paid* for this membership, I should be able to post whatever I want!!!"

I don't think it's a good idea to limit the posting, especially on that forum, because people aren't posting here to get traffic to their site but to inform other indies about their work and get some feedback. The same applies to ads: i don't think anyone gets much traffic to their site from the sigs here.

it wasn't really a commercial concern - just an arbitrary carrot really.

I actually think its not a bad idea... But I don't see us implementing anything like this too soon. Though I do think there might be some value in this sort of approach for certain things...

Just whack a sticky at the top of News & Announcements with a paypal donate button in it, and create a new user group and icon for subscribers. Should take 10 minutes.

I think, just a PayPal donate button is enough... I know I got enough information and knowledge from this board that I'll gladly donate just for that...

Ditto.

(I got a response when I submitted that said my post was too short, so I say again: "ditto.")

And when you get enough badges, you can become a General.. yes sir sir yes :D forwaaaaard march! you could also (if you had a friendlier logo) have some merchandise, I'd like a cup or something, albeit without the anorexic smurfs.

We're actually planning to stick the post content in the small box on the left and leave this big open space for badge collection. We're going to outdo the Scouts and the Army combined. Anyway... I'd post more but I have to finish the badgepedia so people can look up what the various badges are for...
