Hello!

We have just recently uploaded our open beta test of "Harvest: Massive Encounter", a real-time strategy game in which you expand and defend a base against a never-ending horde of aliens.

Earlier this summer we submitted an alpha version of the game to the Swedish Game Awards (http://www.sga.to) and won second prize in the "Best PC Game" category! The game has expanded a lot since then and we hope to receive lots of feedback on the current gameplay (and engine performance). We are hoping that we will be able to compete in the IGF later this year.

Harvest: Massive Encounter Win32 installer: http://www.oxeyegames.com/files/HarvestInstaller.exe (17 MB)

The objective of the game is simply to try to survive for as long as possible. The full version of the game will include several different kinds of high-score tables, and allow player to form "high-score groups" that will compete against other groups. The beta test contains one game mode on one planet (map), but the full version will have more game modes and planets.

Please give the game a go and tell us what you think :)

I even liked older beta of this game. Basically, I like the idea & how it works. And with new beta, it's more polished good game.

You might know what are good things for this game, so I'd pick up few (or some) bad things.

- If it has Endless Challenge mode only, it's too difficult. Well, it might not be so difficult, but people could think so.

- No improvement of player's Harvester - Weapon at all. For me, I like 'level up', and hope there could be some 'level up improvement' for such game. And this game could be too difficult, if I can't do any 'level up' within limited area.

etc etc.

P.S. : Can I write preview of this Beta for Pig-Min? :)

It's gorgeous, and it plays great on my XP machine.

I want to see more upgrades for the turrets and missiles. It seems like they are such radically different weapons systems, that there's room for more.

I want to see more punctuated waves, or a game mode where the aliens give you a breather once every few minutes.

I also feel this is the kind of game where you could really clean up by selling add-on paks with new types of weapons and new types of aliens.

Finally, an online high-score system would enhance it.

Great game!

Ah thanks for the comments! It took a while before anybody commented, so I thought the game perhaps was too non-casual for indiegamer :D

Mr Kwang:
You want the harvesters to be upgrade-able? Currently there isn't much point, since they are so cheap already. You can simply place two harvesters next to a rock to mine minerals faster. Or did you mean like, weapons upgrades for them?

Oh, yes, it would be great to have a preview at Pig-Min. We could also send you updated versions of the game when we add the other game modes and planets. For example, we sent an exclusive screenshot to the Swedish game site FZ.se:

Ah, you are absolutely right. We have planned to have 5 different game modes, of which 3 will be different difficulty settings and 2 will be completely different. One of these "different" modes will be a "wave" mode, where you are given a lot more time between attacks (though the attacks will be tougher). In this mode, all threat levels with a 0 or 1 in the end (such as 10, 11, 20, 21 etc) are "relief" levels that don't spawn aliens. You can use that gap to make expansions etc.

Also, we have planned to have a very detailed high-score system. However, cheating will be a problem... We are trying to prevent it as much as possible, but I guess it's a lost cause :( (Kinda like trying to make a bullet-proof DRM)

Both could be good. But there are not upgrades for Harvester usually, so weapon upgrade is good.

I like it :)

One thing that is a bit glaring from what you have there is that you should make sure the ***standard*** game play ends on a win rather than a loss.

Point people at an initial rules variant that you will win almost by default, a version where you would have to go out of your way to lose. Where the odds are so seriously stacked in your favor that the only way to lose is to stop playing.

By win I mean has an actual ending where you win (mining the entire level would be my choice for a win ending, whilst ineffectual waves crush them selves to death against your mighty base).

I know that sort of thing isn't very interesting or challenging, but thats kind of the point, and remember you get to keep the harder more interesting rules as options for people who care. This just caters for the other, well, 99% by my rough observational calculations :)

Ah, yes that is a very good suggestion. We have talked a little about adding "challenges" with specific objectives, and introducing the player through such a challenge sounds like a good idea.
