When Worlds Collide (http://www.igda-sandiego.org/web/2007/07/when-worlds-collide/), the latest dinner and panel discussion from International Game Developers Association, San Diego (http://www.igda-sandiego.org/), will be hosted at the San Diego Convention Center (http://www.sdccc.org/) on Saturday, August 4, from 6:35 to 9:00 PM as part of the ACM SIGGRAPH Sandbox Symposium (http://sandbox.siggraph.org/) on Video Games.
This is an excellent opportunity to network with professionals in your field as well as to hear about the state and future of the interactive entertainment business from The Behemoth (http://www.thebehemoth.com/) cofounder and president John Baez (Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers), Areae (http://www.areae.net/) president Raph Koster (Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies), Midway (http://www.midway.com/) executive vice president Steve Crane, Junction Point (http://www.junctionpoint.com/) president Warren Spector (System Shock, Thief, Deus Ex), and DFC Intelligence (http://www.dfcint.com/) senior analyst Wanda Meloni.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: In response to overwhelming demand, registration has been opened to everyone who wants to attend this exclusive, FREE event. You are no longer required to be a member of IGDA, but you must RSVP (http://www.igda-sandiego.org/register/) to ensure that you have a seat at this dinner/panel discussion.
WHAT
With innovations in technology and business, video games (like mobile phones) are becoming smaller and more distributed; at the same time, video games are also becoming bigger and more integrated. Mammoth productions from heavyweight studios supported by hordes of A-list developers and "garage" games developed on shoestring budgets by independent and comparatively unknown developers are now pit against each other in competition for leading positions in the same league.
While worldwide sales of video games are expected to reach $13 billion by 2012, the once-homogenous market for video games has expanded to comprise serious, casual, and mobile games in addition to traditional forms of interactive entertainment. In this panel, leaders and pioneers will meet to share their thoughts on the challenges of diverging markets for video games. As developers and executives from both sides of the "big vs. small" divide, each panelist brings a unique perspective to the discussion.
