(WARNING, FREEWARE INSIDE! OPENGL REQUIRED!)
Sometimes (as you've noticed) I want to share some extreme experience ;)
You've probably heard about ABA Games:
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/
Almost a dozen of awesome SHMUP games, including unique TUMIKI Fighters (using enemies as powerups) and great new Torus Trooper (Rez + Tempest).
The thing is that he also created BulletML, the technology which easily allows to describe bullet patterns.
Check this page:
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/bulletml/index_e.html
and java demo (there's also even a flash one!)
It's awesome :)
Also, remembering about Tempest 2000.

tsunami 2010
Pity that I haven't played Tempest 3000 (dreaming about getting that super rare dvd player powered by llamas)...

The Torus game is a really cool idea but somehow all his games have an unbalanced feel to them. Mind you, they're really pretty and fun for a few minutes, but they don't leave me with the desire to come back to them.
And to get controversial, I could say the same of a lot of Yak's games as well. Tempest 2000 and Defender Plus being notable (and incredible) exceptions.
All IMO of course.

Who's afraid of Opengl??? :D
All his games looks more like experimental tech demo,
then games itself.
and the things is, he uses the New D langauge to code these games.
I'm interested in his BulletML, I wonder what the limits are.
since I haven't work on mine yet.
and Emulynx when are you going to start working on a Shmup game?

If you would like to gorge yourself on shmups -- some being simply awesome - this site has collected quite a few:

And, amazingly enough, it's still updating the list each week.

Our company is porting 2 SHMUPs right now, and one semi-SHMUP (I'll mention this if possible when the stuff will get released).
In reality, I've been personally tackling the idea of making a SHMUP for several years.
However, it's like N3 in my personal todo list. Years ago I had a chance to use GBA as a dev platform (we had a publisher). Since then there was a chance to work on mobile stuff, but again, missed it:
(attach)
(that's just a mock up of Atari game remake which should evolve into something else, tssh ;) )
I have some nice ideas in my head but can't really imagine how to implement them on PC since it will require a high res gfx (hint: Guilty Gear X) and my entire plan was lowres.
JnG proves the theory - it's possible, but the effort is enormous.
My friend did two Clay games and atm there was no Platypus, but now there IS one and it wouldn't be really fun to use "quick tech"...
I'm going to investigate some fun tech and fun style to work with. Currently I'm addicted to filters which are used in emus (eagle, sai, hq2x, etc (including one secret thing unused by anybody ;) ). If used properly, they might give exciting result. Looking into it.

I don't like STC too much, my favorite one is SHMUP (http://www.shmup.com/), even though it's in french. Enormous cross platform catalog.

I'm a huge fan of Kenta Cho and his games. He is, in fact, the biggest inspiration I have in my currently very slow moving project.
Torus Trooper? Wow... I'm darn excited. It must be new in the last week or two. Cheers for the update and glad to see a fellow ABA fan (note the *one* 'B':))

BulletML is really great. There is also a little demo applet, which allows you to try patterns in "real time". Write it, refresh, check how it looks and how easy/difficult it is to dodge.

I really want to use it some day... for something.

It sounds awesome, with the names as Giga wing and Psyvariar.
If I'm finish with my flying "Boids" look alike.
I'm going to write one, that can pull patterns out as seen in Shanghai alice games.

Try this Ikaruga clone.

Is one of the most fun shmups that I have been playing.
