Hi, I just found about this weird picture, I hope I'm not reposting.. mod, feel free to ban this post :
http://www.lepouya.com/upload/Colorcrossproof.jpg
take that picture and see that actually the middle part of those crosses have the same color (proven from the inset)!!!
If you want a prove, save that picture and open it with photoshop, cut the middle part of each crosses, paste them into a different area/image and compare them, see that they're the same color !!!
or you can use inkdrop tool..

Amazing. Even better than that light dark shadow one, which was also pretty freaky. I had to cut n paste to believe it.

Oh that is freaky.
I learned in psychology the term for this is color contrast. An amazing example of it! Thanks!

Damn you all for making me want to prove it myself! I couldn't believe it but then I opened up paint, used the dropper tool, and sure enough, the colors are the same. When I drew with them, I found they were only slightly different, so I might have picked up a shade different, but it still didn't explain what it was that I was seeing. So I even cut and paste the two next to each other.
I'll never have those two minutes back. Thanks a lot B-)

That was fun ! I cut and paste both of them within small boxes and started paint background in white. Slowly they changed their colors into dark grey, as if color of light changed. Of cause eye couldn't catch every single change in the color. It should be even more interesting if to make background color changing by some 3d renderer. I'm wondering if this effect can be useful somehow...

And thanks to your eye's built-in edge detection algorithms, this all works out...
Gray surrounded by white will darken, gray surrounded by black will lighten.
