I have a question about online scoring systems. I keep a close watch on my webstats to make sure things are going in the right direction and growing every month. For the last 5 months, the growth has been 18-22% over the previous month. They are still pretty small as I'm sure some of you see 1,000's of visitors a day while I'm still in the low 100's per day.

My question is how to best go about doing an online scoring system that will NOT effect those stats as updating the online database should not technically count as a 'visit' to my site. Would it be best to do this on a completely separate server to keep them apart?

Thanks!

It is easy to exclude URLs from your stats depending on what tool you use to analyze them. So do that and all will be well.

As for 1,000s of visitors a day... don't be disappointed when that doesn't happen for a long, long time...

Thanks Cas!

I figured it would be something simple, but my stats that are provided by my webhost don't seem to give me that much control. I do have access to download the logs though, so I might have to come up with a system that can easily extract what I want from it.

Yeah, I figure at my current growth rate of 18-20% per month, it will still be at least two years before I start hitting the 1,000's per day. I've got 3 new releases coming up though, so hopefully I'll start to see some major gains in traffic.

Damn, I love this stuff... I just wish the $ was better!

Sometimes can be easier to send you highscores to a different sub-domain, eg highscores.yourcompany.com. This also allows (I think) for the possibility of sending the highscores off to a completely different machine so as to not clog you main site. Same goes for downloads.yourcompany.com.
