Hi, I think I need to swap out audiere. I need a different solution that will still give me Ogg Vorbis or some other decent compression for large sound files. I have sent an email to fmod to see if I qualify for indie pricing (3K is kinda expensive...) but I would like to know if there is something else that I should be looking at.

Thanks,

I thought FMOD had a pretty generation licensing term... $100 for Shareware?

The vorbis libs are actually simple and painless to use, so use anything you want plus them for decompression.

Personally I'd just go for OpenAL+Vorbis libs.

Try out irrklang (from the author or irrlicht) it's free. http://www.ambiera.com/irrklang/

And may I ask why you had to stop using audiere?

We have sound library:

- Simple C interface, about 14 functions.
- DirectSound output.
- WAV, OGG, IT, XM, S3M formats.
- From file or memory.
- Buffered or streamed.
- Play, pause, stop, volume, repeating, play status.

If you need only OGG format, other formats support can be removed from
library.

Contact us if you interesting.

So did I. Then I sent an email to find out what the terms are to qualify as shareware. I don't know how anyone manages to qualify. I certainly don't.

plus the fmod license is for one title anyways. IIRC BASS's shareware license includes multi-titles and is about the same at 100 (Euros but you could still pay with whatever currency you use).

Sharpfish, I am converting because REE is crashing on about ~2% of my users machines and turning off sound stabilized the beast for the one who has reported back already.

The guy at fmod reported back that Rusty Axe qualifies for indie pricing so I am going to try their free demo. The thing looks impressive and also supports Mac so if this solves the problem then I'm going to get a multi-game license and be done. I'll report back my results (I'm keeping notes so I can blog as well).

BTW, I contacted RAD as well but the best they could do was 50% off for indies which is still more than I, as an indie, am going to pay for a sound engine.

Thanks for all the input,

When I was using audiere in my game Angkor, some people reported random crashes, which disappeared when I switched to Bass.

Bass costs 100 Euros if your software sells for less than $40, and you can use it in an unlimited number of titles. It also has a mac (Osx) version, for which you need a separate license, but you get 30% off if you're buying licenses for both pc & mac. Fmod is $100 for shareware, but only for ONE TITLE. You make another game & you will need to buy another license.

I think we swapped from Audiere to Bass in popcap engine.
