Hey guys..
I'm trying to find a host for a few websites etc. I've got a years sub to dreamhost, but frankly, its a bit poop (oversold to the point where its response time is unusable).
Now I'm looking for something thats basically just reliably fast to execute simple PHP scripts. Nothing too fancy. Probably a vps would be ok.
I'm not doing much in the way of intensive scripting, mainly hosting blog/game sites, perhaps a forum or two.. And of course some galleries and personal file hosting for myself.
Anyone know something in the <40 usd range?
I'm looking at liquidweb before this thread gets closed :) but I need alternatives. I've been to webhostingtalk, but frankly, I dont trust that place.

I've been using Lunarpages (http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/) for the last several years and couldn't be happier. Not only are their servers responsive -- they handled the massive surge I got when TIGRS was publicized by major news sites like Joystiq, Kotaku, and Ars Technica, without breaking a sweat -- but their support (the few times I've needed it) is stellar; unmatched, really. High two-thumbs-up rating from this long-time customer! :)

or you could try servage.net (http://www.servage.net/?coupon=cust29571). (you do get like 10% more disk space by using this link. so do i.) haven't put them to the real test of a serious traffic peak yet, but their server clusters seem very well built.
good web controls too, and they don't care about all the right things (want unlimited php memory ?go ahead. want to disable secure php ? go ahead. want to hand edit dns entries ? go ahead. etc)

I have enjoyed both www.phpwebhosting.com and www.lttech.com
They offer lots of stuff, and cheap prices. SSH, php, mysql etc.

I second the recommendation for Lunarpages. I've been using their shared hosting for a few years with no problems. I currently have four sites running on three accounts and I'm ramping up to launch a new site on a fourth account. The features alone justify the price, but the support is phenomenal.

Like you, I often looked at shared hosting but I have never been personally satisfied with it. I now have my own linux VPS for 29.99 at http://www.futurehosting.biz/
My friend have the 9.99$ package and he his also very happy about it. He wanted to do linux experiments without having a full dedicated machine at home.
Strong points of Futurehosting VPS
You're free to install the applications that you want
You can have the php version that you want
You can host a bunch of domains (web and mail) with no troubles
Not oversold (at least, doesn't appear to be)
Going through the VPS route (without the control panel) was very enjoyable. You have a complete already installed server 15 minutes after you make the first payment.
Since you can install what you want, I took the liberty of installing SVN. I now have a fully backup source management system outside of my home (yeah). I also tested mono/c# on it.. that was great!
I also use the extra space to make personal backup.. It's the fastest host I ever used (and I tried many hosts using grid-based hosting).
I have no regret.. there is no contract, it's stable and cheap.
Note:
Since I have some linux experience, I went for the unmanaged service and no control panel. I pay around 29$/monthly.
you can go to WebHostingTalk.com forums to get more information about web hostings..
The big plus for futurehosting.biz is their customer support.. every time I had a question they replied in the first 8 minutes. They never let me down, I called them 3 times and I was amazed to see how fast
they reacted. I'm not a big customer for them but I allways feel like I'm important. I've been with them for 6-8 months so far.
another happy customer from FH ( http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=594931 )

nice link to check the speed of any web host:
speed test (http://internetsupervision.com/scripts/urlcheck/check.aspx)
This will fire a benchmark test from these locations:
Washington, DC (3 Mbps)
Santiago, Chile (760 Kbps)
Dortmund, Germany (5 Mbps)
Los Angeles, CA (1.5 Mbps)
Beijing, China (5 Mbps)
Detroit, MI (5 Mbps)
Chicago, IL (45 Mbps)
St. Petersburg, Russia (5 Mbps)
Gloucester, UK (5 Mbps)
Sydney, Australia (5 Mbps)
you can test one of my site (Woxxom.com) to check the speed of my own VPS (from futurehosting.biz)
NOTE: I'm not affiliated to any hosting company.

really depends on your needs and expertise.
I use http://www.serverpronto.com/ starter packege ($30/month) for my linux server which i primarily use for dns, mail and some small websites. The server itself has been very reliable.
However you do need to know what your doing as the package is cheap for a reason, 1 reboot per month and charges for technical help (unless it a hardware failure). Unless you can do everything yourself it's not a good idea, but if you do then it's cheap and reliable.
This means you need to know how to set up dns, apache, sendmail and also need to know how to log into your sever incase you need to do manual stuff like reboot the server (if for example webmin crash's which can happen if the server's been running for 200 odd days).
