Consider a hypothetical company name Emerald Technologies, and say that was the name of your new company. Now, assume that the "ideal" website name, emeraldtech.com was already taken. What would be your best alternative:

1)emeladtechnologies.com

2)emeraldt.com

3) something else

for me, 1) I think is too long. The best choice in my view would be to good with 2).

Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if there is a business with that same name using the site? If there is, you'll need to think of some other name.

I vote for 3. If you really like emerald, there are still lots of other possibilities (I haven't checked any of these domains):

Emerald Games
Emerald Studios
Emerald Software
Emerald Entertainment
Emerald Eye
Emerald Cat
Emerald Funbags
etc

You might want to try plugging in some primary and secondary words at NameBoy (http://www.nameboy.com). It's a pretty good site for brainstorming domain names and it tells you if the generated names are taken or not.

Thanx for the ideas. Now, assume the company name Emerald Technologies is not taken. I have decided to go with either
1)emeraldtechnologies.com
or
2)emeraldt.com

with 1), the name might get too long, but it has the advantage of conveying the message of the company. In a way, it is somewhat more professional sounding.

With 2) the name is half the size, but it neither conveys any message not is it pro-sounding.

With this in mind, please update your ideas!

thnx

I would be more likely to type www.emeraldtechnologies.com than www.emeraldt.com into the address bar if I knew the company name but wasn't sure about the link. I'd also probably try emeraldtech.com next. If neither tech or technologies worked, my next step would be to google the name.

However, depending on how much I wanted to get to the site, I might give up before googling.

I'd say that if you're dead set on shortening it, go with emeraldtech.com... emeraldt.com looks strange, and wouldn't make sense to someone if they read it without already knowing your company name. Whereas "tech" is obviously short for "technology" or "technologies".

Or www.emeraldtek.com if you like the 80's. :)

emeraldt.com is confusing. emeraldtech.com is better, you want to keep it as short as you can. are you a 'technology' company?

I really don't like the EmeraldT.com. I would rather type out the entire name. I think most people are used to long domain names at this point, and wouldn't have a problem with it.

I would be careful about picking a name just like someone else's name. If EmeraldTech.com is already taken, and you use EmeraldTechnologies.com, then you are probably going to end up with a lot of confused customers going to both sites. Plus you could end up being accused of cyber-squatting or a trademark violation if your company name is confusingly similar to EmeraldTech. Ask Mike Rowe about that.

No, i've checked that out already. The company ONCE had the name of my company. Now that company has changed the name to Mara Technologies. I found this info out using a WHOIS search. I thought the domain owner thus would not need this name any longer. I will try to contact him and see what he says regarding his domain.

Emerald Funbags LOL

I do kinda like Emerald Eye though. Maybe we can combine a few of these suggestions... Emerald Eye Studios.

(P.S. for those following the other thread, I'll just stick studios at the end of anything wont I? ;))
